Semiotics/Rule of thirds

Rule of thirds
Rule of thirds allows you to align and place where you want writing and images of the cover of the magazine.

On this example the first third has the one woman standing in it. The second third has two women standing in it. The top third has half the woman’s head because she is so tall. The last third has the student in it. The wording at the top has been made symmetrical and is directly in the middle. The wording at the bottom has also been made symmetrical and on both lines ‘St Louise’s’ in the first third.

Semiotics
There are three types of semiotics. These are:
1. Icons – which look like what they represent
2. Symbols – which need to be learned and they don’t look like what they represent
3. Index – which is more suggestive and is connected to what they represent
Semiotics can be used on covers of magazines or in magazines but have can different effects on different people. For example if there was an image of Eminem in a magazine doing something explicit some people could be supportive of it but others could find it offensive therefore semiotics can be used negatively or positively.
